Whatever the trauma that you’ve faced is, you may notice that it changed how you view yourself and can affect every aspect of your life.

Trauma therapy may be right for you if any of the following resonate:

  •  You feel unsafe in your relationships and constantly worry that others will hurt or abandon you

  •  You often find yourself in a state of fight, flight, or shut down

  •  You feel disconnected from the most authentic and true version of yourself

  •  If this sounds like you, you don’t have to walk this journey alone.

What is Trauma?

Trauma is a natural human response to adverse experiences. It’s how your brain and body helps ensure that you are able to survive something a deeply disturbing or distressing event. Your mind and body try to do everything it can to keep you safe in the moment and in the future. How you respond and hold these events is your brain's and body's way of making sure you survive something that was terrifying, horrifying, or disgusting--and trying to keep you stay safe from now on.

Sometimes we need some help to deal with the physical, emotional and psychological effects of a traumatic event. Experiencing trauma is like breaking a bone. When a bone is broken, it needs to be set, limit movement or pressure put on that area, and over time, you have to rebuild the strength and mobility in that area.

Our therapists have received extensive training to help you recognize the effects that traumatic events or multiple traumatic events have had on your past as well as your present while focusing on reducing shame and isolation.

Often times, our clients start to re-experience distressing memories or events. This is typically a sign that your brain and body is ready to start exploring these suppressed memories or feelings. With trauma therapies, our therapists focus on soothing the nervous system, integrating traumatic memories and re-examining how you view yourself as well as the impacts it has had on you.

 Philosophy:

Often times we store trauma in our brain and bodies like we put things in the basement. It’s where all the things go that we don’t want to look at. Sometimes our tubs are labeled and organized, or sometimes not so much. As our basement gets more full, it gets harder to navigate, or becomes overwhelming.

Processing trauma in therapy is something that is best done after an established trust with the therapist. Telling your story when you aren’t ready, or you aren’t comfortable, can be retraumatizing. Our practice refers to where our trauma is stored as the basement, because in a home, it’s where you put all the things you don’t want to look at. Sometimes it’s organized, sometimes it’s not.

When you are ready, we will walk down the basement stairs together and sit together at a part of your basement and start to unpack it. Prior to the end of our session, we will pack the tub back up as best as we can and I will ensure you have the tools and resources to help with how you may feel afterwards.

 Benefits of Processing Trauma:

  •  Shift from dwelling on the past and worrying about the future. You can learn to be present with yourself

  •  Overcome the unhealthy behaviors and thought patterns that you’ve adapted since your traumatic experience

  •  Regulate your nervous system and calm your thoughts, so you can reconnect with your life—your authentic self can lead you, rather than your fear.
